Fresh off her Golden Globe nomination for Mudbound, Mary J. Blige returns to Netflix next year for an adaptation of the critically-acclaimed comic series The Umbrella Academy.
The premise begins with 43 children being born on the same day in 1989. This happened despite the mothers having no knowledge of being pregnant before the births. These children grow up with super-hero powers and must now overcome their internal dysfunction to uncover the truth about their father’s mysterious death and prevent an potential apocalypse.
Standing in there way is Cha Cha (Blige), a time-traveling assassin who gets off on torture and views herself as a “pain artist.” A dark role like this is new territory for Blige and sure to have her fans buzzing.
The Umbrella Academy hits the streaming platform on February 15.
