Charles Martin has taken a step closer to another title shot after stopping Gerald Washington tonight in an IBF eliminator.
Since neither man relied on their jabs, the bout featured awkward exchanges as both men struggled to establish punching distance. Body punching was mostly neglected, leading to the fighters waiting on the other to make a mistake before launching a home-run haymaker.
Despite the lack of consistent action, Martin’s better punching technique would be the deciding factor. Washington telegraphed a left jab which the southpaw Martin immediately countered with an overhand left. The shot sent Washington toppling to the canvas. And despite Washington beating the count, referee Tony Weeks observed the fighter’s unsteady legs and called the fight off in the sixth.
Charles Martin improves to 28-2-1 (25 KOs).
