LAS VEGAS — Former Pound 4 Pound #1 Roman Gonzalez won his first bout in two years by scoring a fifth-round KO of Moises Fuentes in tonight’s Canelo-GGG 2 pay-per-view opener.
Gonzalez’s left uppercut opened a bloody cut above Fuentes’s right eye in round two. From there, Gonzalez began scoring heavily with the left hook to the head and body. While Fuentes occasionally score right hands at mid-range, Gonzalez was out-landing him 3-1 with inside combinations.
Starting in the fourth, the fight took on a phone booth nature with each man exchanging heavy body shots. While Gonzalez’s talent gave him an edge in these firefights, the former champion did not display his signature fluid combinations.
Turns out he didn’t need them. In round five, Gonzalez had Fuentes on the ropes and ended matters with an overhand right. Fuentes crumpled to his back motionless, prompting referee Robert Byrd to call off the bout.
The win improves Chocolatito’s record to 47-2.
