QUEBEC CITY — Amir Imam’s goal of getting a title shot against Victor Postol went up in smoke after suffering an upset TKO loss tonight against Adrian Granados.
The “tuneup” went as planned early on with Imam dropping Granados with a counter straight right in the first round. Granados weathered more power shots to survive and immediately regrouped in the third by taking the fight inside. From this range, Granados’ shorter arms allowed him to score heavily with hooks and take the leverage off Imam’s shots.
The pace and accumulation of punches left Imam fatigued, bloodied and battered by the eighth round. He was unable to properly defend himself after a series of Granados right hands left him folded over on the ropes. The referee had little choice but to call the fight off.
The 26-year-old Granados improves to 17-4-2 (12 KOs). Imam falls to 18-1 (15 KOs).
