Matthysse-Provodnikov Set for April 18, Both Promise KOs and “Fight of the Year”

There will be blood.

Formidable super lightweight sluggers Lucas Matthysse and Ruslan Provodnikov have agreed to face each other on the April 18 edition of HBO’s “Boxing After Dark,” live from Verona, New York.

The announcement was delayed several weeks due to issues selecting a venue. Originally, Matthysse (Golden Boy) and Provodnikov’s (Banner Promotions) promoters hoped to have the fight at Carson, California’s StubHub Center, the site of Provodnikov’s 2013 “Fight of the Year” battle with Timothy Bradley. But with the date unavailable, the focus shifted to the East Coast and Turning Stone Casino, a venue that’s recently held boxing cards by Mayweather Promotions and the now-defunct Iron Mike Productions.

“The Provodnikov Matthysse matchup is destined to be one of the must-see fights of the year and we’re looking forward to hosting another exciting night of boxing at Turning Stone,” said Ray Halbritter, Oneida Nation representative the Turning Stone Casino. “In less than two years, we’ve hosted 15 nationally televised fights, distinguishing our resort as premier destination for world-class boxing.”

Since losing a decision to Danny Garcia in 2013, Matthysse engaged in a 2014 “Fight of the Year” favorite against John Molina, winning by an 11th round KO, and scoring a second round knockout over Robert Ortiz to close out the year. With his last 13 wins coming inside the distance, Matthysse is confident the style matchup against Provodnikov favors him

“I only want the biggest fights against the best fighters and this fight between Provodnikov and I will surely be ‘Fight of the Year’,” said Lucas Matthysse.  “Provodnikov is a warrior that never stops throwing punches and his style suits me very well.  I’m confident that I will win, and since Danny Garcia doesn’t want to fight me again, this fight will prove that I am one of the best fighters in the world.”

In his first fight back since losing a split decision to Chris Algieri, Provodnikov scored an easy knockout over a faded Jose Luis Castillo in November. He expects to replicate his 2013 “Fight of the Year” with two important differences — winning and scoring a knockout.

“I’m glad that this fight is finally done,” said Ruslan Provodnikov. “This is the fight I have been waiting for a long time. I think that this fight will be nominated for either ‘Fight of the Year’ or ‘Knockout of the Year’.”

The “Boxing After Dark” telecast airs at 9:45 p.m. ET.

There will be blood! When I heard this bout was coming to the East Coast,  I already started looking at flights in anticipation that the fight would land at Madison Square Garden or the Barclays Center. Unfortunately, both venues are booked up on April 18, leaving Turning Stone Casino near Syracuse as the only viable New York option. If you reside anywhere in the area, checking out this fight live will be well worth it.
