Heavyweight contender Mike Perez has suffered a shoulder injury in sparring that will cancel his May 24 HBO main event against Bryant Jennings.
The unspecified injury occurred this morning and was relayed to Tom Loeffler, a representative of Perez’s promoter K2 Promotions.
“I was floored when I got the call this morning from Perez’s manager Patrick Thomas that he injured his shoulder in sparring,” said Loeffler. “Mike is flying back to Ireland to see a shoulder specialist. I’m hoping to hear good news that the injury is not too serious and the fight can be rescheduled in the near future. I know Mike is devastated because of this setback but looks forward to continuing his dream of marching foward to a WBC world title fight.”
The fight would have followed this weekend’s WBC heavyweight title match between Chris Arreola and Bermane Stiverne. Jennings and Perez are respectively ranked #4 and #5 by the WBC and were to compete in a title eliminator.
“When I received the news that Perez got injured I felt so bad for Bryant because I know how hard he trained for this fight and how much he was looking forward to fighting for this WBC elimination bout,” explained Gary Shaw, who signed Jennings to a promotional agreement late last year. “I’m hope for that Perez’s injury is minor and we can get these guys back in the ring in a timely manner.”
At press time, HBO has opted to cancel the entire card, which was booked for the American Bank Arena in Corpus Christi, Texas with Daniel Geale vs. Matthew Macklin as the co-main event.
