While Jean Grae continues to work on her next album Cake or Death, she’s supplying fans with a Gangsta Grillz mixtape offering entitled Cookies or Comas. It’s surprising Ms. Grae would even enlist DJ Drama. One view of her eccentric Twitter page posts makes it clear that it’s not past Jean to do double duty rhyming and hosting her own tape. Boogie Blind’s production plays out the original vocal sample in the beginning before stripping away the rhythms and leaving some “Impeach the President” (or similar) drums slightly tweaked for a double time effect. That’s all Grae needs to deliver a verse (sans chorus) loaded with surreal imagery.
To close, Grae uses the last 35-40 seconds to offer commentary on Scrabble, Rudy Huxtable and punching your Mom in the face. If that doesn’t wet your appetite for Cookies or Comas (June 23), nothing will. Scrabble, bitch!
