Argentinian slugger Marcos Maidana believes a relentless body attack will be the key component to defeating Erik Morales in their pay-per-view matchup this Saturday (April 9).
Maidana is a heavy favorite despite coming off a spirited loss to Amir Khan in December. Maidana stormed back from an early knockdown to have Khan out on his feet several times in the championship rounds. Maidana states he learned the importance of utilizing body punches early, which in retrospect he feels would have slowed down Khan enough for a later kill. That concerted effort downstairs was also lacking in his bout before Khan against aged veteran DeMarcus Corley, which almost resulted in an upset loss.
Maidana hopes to replicate the work he displayed last year against Victor Cayo. Maidana scored a 6th round KO off a short right hook to the body in that contest.
“It’s such an effective weapon. We focused more on body-punching and I have to do it more,” Maidana said of the upcoming Morales bout. “When I connect my opponents feel it… I focused on the head [against Khan] which was a mistake.”
Maidana-Morles headlines Golden Boy’s April 9 “Action Heroes” PPV. The card will begin at 9 PM ET.
