After a disasterous one fight stint in the UFC, James Toney will return to boxing with a February 24 match in San Bernardino, California.

The 42 year old Toney (72-6-3, 44 KOs) will face “Dangerous” Damon Reed (45-14, 32 KOs) for Toney’s fringe IBA heavyweight title. Toney last defended that belt with 2nd round KO over Matthew Greer September 2009.

Last year, Toney was briefly considered as an option to face Wladimir Klitshcko. However, the IBF blocked the potential title match on the grounds Toney had been too “inactive,” only fighting four bouts over the last four years, and none of his wins being significant in that time frame.

Toney vs. Reed will be held at the San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com for $40-$70.

Around 2003, I really thought James Toney had a legit shot to make a lot of noise at heavyweight. For a time, he did. He knocked out Evander Holyfield, and then went on to defeat John Ruiz to pick up the WBA portion of the heavyweight title.

Then the problems started. He tested positive for a banned steroid, causing the Ruiz decision to be reversed and the title stripped. Then the flat performance against Hasim Rahman in 2006 earned him a dubious draw. I thought he beat Sam Peter in their first fight. But in the rematch age seemed to finally catch up with Toney, and Peter dominated him.

At 42 years old, it’s unlikely that Toney has enough left to knock off the few contenders needed to earn one last big fight against either of the Klitschkos. But Lights Out still has a name, and that may be enough to eventually get him in there with the likes of a Chris Arreola or Tomasz Adamek if Toney can get a decent win streak going.

February 24 will be our first glimpse of if these scenarios are feasible or just a pipe dream.
