Canelo Inks Multi-Fight DAZN/ Matchroom Deal, Bivol Confirmed for May 7

Canelo returns to light-heavyweight to challenge Bivol on Cinco de Mayo.

The first building block of Canelo Alvarez’s plan for a blockbuster 2022 has been revelaed. The Pound 4 Pound superstar has announced a multi-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing and DAZN which begins at light-heavyweight against WBA title-holder Dmitry Bivol on May 7.

While figures have not been disclosed, ESPN reports the deal will include an additional fight in September (rumored to be the long-awaited trilogy with Gennady Golovkin), and a third fight in December worth upwards to $160 million.

The Bivol fight will air exclusively on DAZN pay-per-view at $59.99 for current subscribers and $79.99 for new customers with a one month subscription.

Alvarez made history last November by knocking out Caleb Plant to become the first undisputed Mexican champion at super middleweight. The Bivol fight is his second title appearance at light-heavyweight following a stoppage win over Sergey Kovalev in 2019.

“I am very happy with this fight against Dmitry Bivol,” said Canelo. “It is another great challenge for me and my career — especially as I go up in weight and face an exceptional light heavyweight champion like Bivol.

“I am also very excited that we have this fight slated for Cinco De Mayo Weekend – May 7 – for all the fans to enjoy. We will be ready, like we always are.”

The undefeated Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs) has made 7 defenses since capturing the WBA strap in 2017. After being unable to secure a unification bout against Zurdo Ramirez, Bivol expressed relief to finally get a marquee opponent on the biggest stage.

“I always only wanted to fight the best!” said Bivol. “I believe that the rest of my goals will begin materialize on May 7!”

At press time, the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is the rumored frontrunner for the venue.
