Frankie Gomez put it all together tonight in a shutout win over spoiler Mauricio Herrera.
Herrera, known for his high workrate and defense, had neither against Gomez, who bullied and outlanded him in every round. A cut and heavy bruising surfaced under Herrera’s left eye in the third, and he was briefly stunned and backpedaling to close out the stanza.
Plainly put, Herrera looked like an old and worn out fighter. He failed to gain an offensive foothold in any round. Whenever Gomez let his hands go, Herrera found himself being pushed to the ropes. Round eight contained a telling moment where Herrera placed his arms on the ropes in frustration at being unable to land clean shots.
For the rest of the fight, Gomez fought off the backfoot and still succeeded in beating Herrera to the punch.
Scorecards all read 100-90 for Gomez. BeatsboxingMayhem also had a Gomez shutout. Should Herrera continue on, this fight has likely placed him firmly in a gatekeeper role.
