MEXICO CITY — Antonio Margarito’s return after four years away from the ring nearly ended in the sixth when Jorge Paez Jr. planted him with a left hook. But the Tijuana Tornado showed enough glimpses of his renowned stamina from yesteryear to survive and score a unanimous decision at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico.
Most of the fight was fought toe to toe with the smaller Paez being competitive but struggling to match Margarito’s punch output. In addition, the inside warfare with the much larger Margarito prevented Paez from having a strong rally in the crucial latter rounds.
Despite the knockdown, Margarito won via scorecards of 97-93, 96-94 and 95-94.
At 37 years old, Margarito is a far cry from the feared welterweight witnessed in the mid to late 2000s. Being hurt and nearly stopped by Paez Jr. shows that a cashout fight is the only feasible option. A Mosley rematch represents the best option unless Miguel Cotto has any interest in a sideshow rubbermatch.
