WBA middleweight titlist Danny Jacobs and Peter Quillin has come to terms to face each other on December 5 at the Barclays Center.
The matchup between the two native Brooklynites began gaining steam last year following Jacobs’ return after a lengthy sabbatical due to cancer. He won a version of the WBA title by knocking out Jerrod Fletcher in August 2014. Quillin, who relinquished his WBO title last year, fought to a draw against IBF belt-holder Andy Lee in April, and knocked out Michael Zerafa in five rounds last month.
“The fans have waited a long time for this fight and now it’s finally here,” said Quillin. “I was back in the gym on Monday after my fight against Zerafa preparing for December 5. I know there is so much at stake for me — a belt and Brooklyn bragging rights. It’s going to be a night to remember for me and for all of Brooklyn.”
Since winning the title, Jacobs has made two successful defenses over Caleb Truax (TKO12) and Sergio Mora (TKO2). Brooklyn connection aside, Jacobs finds additional motivation in Quillin being the first time he’s faced a consensus Top 5 middleweight.
“There is no doubt this is going to be one of the biggest fights Brooklyn has ever seen,” said Jacobs. “Peter and I go back a long time, but this is business. I’m the champion and he’s the challenger. I’m going to do everything I can to win on December 5 and show the world that I’m the best Brooklyn has to offer.”
The fight airs live on Showtime at 9 p.m. ET. Tickets go on sale October 6 via ticketmaster.com and barclayscenter.com.
