Matthysse decision's Provodnikov in a war

A new champion will be crowned October 3 when top contenders Lucas Matthysse and Viktor Postol clash for the vacant WBC light welterweight title.

Postol comes into the bout undefeated (27-0, 11 KOs) with an impressive HBO performance in being the first man to knock out Selchuk Aydin last year. Postol followed up with an eight-round unanimous decision over Jake Giuriceo. Matthysse, who’s on a three-fight win/KO streak since losing to Danny Garcia in September 2013, believes Postol to be one-dimensional.

“Postol isn’t anything big; he boxes well but that’s it,” said Matthysse. “I saw part of his fight against Selcuk Aydin but other than that there aren’t very many videos of him on the Internet. I’m not taking him lightly though, because he’s at the top of the rankings for a reason.”

Out of his recent opponents, Matthysse sees Postol having physical similarities to John Molina, the fighter that Matthysse knocked out in 2014’s consensus Fight of the Year.

“Postol is tall like John Molina, but Molina came to fight,” Matthyysse reflected. “Postol, I don’t think so. He moves his left very well, fights at a distance, seems fast on his feet, and has excellent head movement. Against Aydin he got off to a slow start but then dominated and got the knockout. He’s good, but I’m confident that I’ll be the WBC World Champion.”

Matthysse is coming off a unanimous decision win over Ruslan Provodnikov. The 31-year-old Postol will be receiving the first title shot of his eight year career.

“I am glad that I am finally getting my chance to fight for the WBC world title after all those hurdles and delays,” said Viktor Postol. “To get to this fight I had to go through 6 years of hard work and dedication in the gym and in the ring. I am ready mentally and physically to win this fight and bring the world title back to the Ukraine!”

Matthysse vs. Postol will air on HBO’s Boxing After Dark live from Carson, California’s StubHub Center at 10:15 p.m. ET.
