VERONA, NY — Last night’s Mayweather Promotions exhibition was disrupted when underdog veteran Derek Edwards (27-3-1, 14 KOs) shocked previously undefeated Badou Jack (160101, 11 KOs) with pinpoint right hands to score a first round knockout.

Edwards was stepping in looking to time a right hand counter, and barely needed 30 seconds before he caught Jack coming in with an overhand right. Jack crashed to the canvas and got up on unsteady legs. When attempting to clinch, he was clubbed to the floor a second time with another right followed by a glancing left hook. Jack again beat the count, but couldn’t stand up straight, resulting in the referee appropriately calling the fight off.

As they say, this is why they fight the fights. Edwards came into this fight 1-3-1 in his last 5 bouts, with 2 of the defeats coming via knockout. And yet, he bulldozed Jack with the first solid punch he landed. You never know how style matchups are going to flesh out until the fighters actually get in the ring.
