Billing this anticipated video as “The Truth Will Set You Free,” Trinidad James gave an “apology without an actual apology” speech in admitting that he picked the wrong time and wrong venue to talk down on the state of New York Hip-Hop. Being here in Atlanta, the PR storyline spun on around James when “All Gold Everything” was hot was that he was “smarter” than what his image led you to believe. And once you got the mixtape and eventually the album, you’d realize he was a brilliant artist.

Right.

In that vein, he frames his comments as “tough love” designed to get NYC to start supporting its local talent like Action Bronson and Black Dave (as if those artists and similar ones like Joey Bada$$, Flatbush Zombies etc. aren’t getting love just because they don’t have singles played 50 times a day on the radio). Something tells me Maino still wants to give his own tough love, preferably also on camera with James having a starring role.
