KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA — Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (23-3-1) got back in the win column yesterday with a hard-fought unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Guillermo Avila (11-1) on Boxeo Telemundo.
Avila brought pressure from the opening stanza and keep Vazquez Jr. on his heels with hard, swooping hooks to the head. Avila best work was to the body, which made Vazquez Jr. shy away from inside work and focus on working the jab.
When Avila’s pace slowed in the middle rounds, Vazquez Jr. picked up his own offense by keeping distance with left jabs and countering Avila’s wild swings with short right crosses. One of the best action rounds occurred in the eighth, which saw each fighter delivered significant shots — Avila with clubbing power blows to the body, and Vazquez crashing home several counter right hands.
The championship rounds were fought on Vazquez Jr.’s terms in regards to mid-range distance, making it difficult for Avila to score with the body punches that marked the earlier rounds. A questionable knockdown in favor of Vazquez was ruled a slip in the final round, but Avila’s work stood out in those final three minutes courtesy of his renewed body punching.
The judges sided with Vazquez Jr.’s more consistent defense, ring generalship and more accurate, although much less damaging and consistent, punch output over the second half of the fight. The unanimous scores read 116-112.
