"I would be proud to fight Mayweather. To beat him, yes, it would be very difficult. You have to be well-trained and throw punches and more punches. I think other fighters respect him too much..."

WBC junior welterweight titlist Lucas Matthysse already have his eyes sight on a 2014 pay-per-view showdown with Floyd Mayweather if he defeats Danny Garcia on September 14.

In an interview with Luis Sandoval of Boxingscene Radio, Matthysse confirmed rumors that he would be the favorite for Mayweather’s next fight and spoke on the strategy he’d take into the bout.

Yes, that’s what I’ve been hearing that whoever wins this fight, will be Floyd Mayweather’s next opponent. I would be proud to fight Mayweather. To beat him, yes, it would be very difficult. You have to be well-trained and throw punches and more punches. I think other fighters respect him too much. It must be very difficult fighting against him by the way he moves and his form, but you have to do good work and hit him in the arms and body. I think that’s the key. I would be very proud to fight him and hopefully the winner gets this fight.

Matthysse is currently on a two-year, six fight win streak, with all the victories coming by knockout. At press time, his bout with Danny Garcia is the only other confirmed bout on the highly anticipated Mayweather-Canelo pay-per-view card.

The first reaction from a lot of people will be this indicates Matthysse is “looking ahead” and not focused on Garcia, who perhaps presents the biggest challenge of Lucas’s career (definitely the most important). I’m going to take a different angle from the usual boxing cliché. With any career field, you need to look ahead to plan out your course of action. Why wouldn’t Matthysse look at this fight as a Mayweather audition? Instead of making him unfocused, I’d argue that fact will make Matthysse ever more determined in his preparation (his reinvention after the Judah and Alexander losses serve as a good precedent on his ability to refine his approach).

Let me hear your opinion. Does Matthysse’s Mayweather talk worry you about his mindset heading into September 14?
