Johnathon Banks has suffered a thumb injury and will not be able to compete in a scheduled February 16 rematch against Seth Mitchell.

Per Banks’s manager Bernd Boente, Banks broke a thumb while sparring. The recovery time is estimated to be at least six weeks.

“He suffered the injury last night in sparring,” Boente confirmed to Beats, Boxing & Mayhem. “After speaking with a doctor today it looks like he’ll be out at least 6 weeks. The card will still go on with Adrian Broner and Gavin Rees headlining.”

The cancellation is the third Golden Boy fight to fall through due to injury, joining Zab Judah vs. Danny Garcia and Kell Brook vs. Devon Alexander.

At press time, Banks and Mitchell could not be reached for comment.

2013 is feeling a lot like early 2012 with all these fight delays/cancellations. Ironically, I had a Banks interview scheduled for earlier today and Boente just called to give me the bad news. With just a week left, it’s highly unlikely Mitchell will risk taking on a replacement opponent that’s good enough to be shown on HBO. Another fight bites the dust…
