In less than two weeks, the biggest boxing PPV card of 2011 will commence. Floyd Mayweather’s return aside, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erik Morales are bringing the additional star power of their dedicated Mexican fanbases with their bouts also coinciding with Mexican Independence Day weekend. The last time a big name Mexican fighter fought during this weekend, it was Juan Manuel Marquez coming up short against Floyd Mayweather. This year, the odds are good that either Canelo, Morales or possibly both will emerge victorious from their respective, expected to be action-packed bouts with sluggers Alfonso Gomez and Lucas Matthysse. While title shots and eliminators are on the line, Alvarez and Morales explain why next weekend pride will be at stake more than anything else on fight night.
SAUL ALVAREZ ON FIGHTING MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND
It means a lot as it became customary to fight on the patriotic days and I am proud to represent my country and I’ll do it with great honor and pride. I believe without a doubt that the month of September is the most patriotic of our nation and I really love to fight or be part of this great weekend!
In 2010 I fought on the weekend of Independence from Mexico and defeated Carlos ‘Tata’ Baldomir from Argentina. Now I hope I succeed in my fight against Alfonso Gomez in another weekend of the Independence of Mexico.
ERIK MORALES ON FIGHTING MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY WEKEEND
Honestly I feel a little bad since September 1 is the day of my birthday and regularly fighting on the Independence Day of Mexico I have to train, and logically I can not celebrate with my family.
However, since this is a very important date for the Mexicans I also hope to celebrate with a victory on September 17, because I want to win my fourth championship in four divisions.
