Mayweather Apologizes to Manny, But Keeps “Poochiao” Nickname and Shows Off New Asian Friends

"I love everybody, I don't have a racist bone in my body," Mayweather said. "Some of my guys are Muslim, some of my guys are Jews. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, whites it doesn't matter. There's nothing but love in my heart. Anybody that was affected by what I said, I apologize as a man. Forgive me for saying what I said. I was just having fun. I didn't mean it in a bad way."

“He truly believes he’s one of the best. But the thing I know is I am the best”

Floyd Mayweather on Manny Pacquiao

After bein denounced by large media outlets like ESPN as homophobic and racist, Floyd Mayweather had made some conciliatory gestures concerning his 10 minute UStream rant against Manny Pacquiao earlier this week.

In the clip, Mayweather invoked several derogatory Asian stereotypes against Pacquiao, who is of Filipino descent. He promised to “cook that yellow chump,” “kick the midget’s ass,” and then “cook him up with some barbecued dog.”

Today, Mayweather released another video apologizing for offending anyone, but continued to taunt his pound for pound rival with a new “Poochiao” nickname. He also filmed two female assistants, one Thai and the other Chinese, to show that his previous derogatory comments about Pacquiao’s ethnicity were not serious.

“Poochiao is in the house, with the power pellets!” Mayweather began jovially, alluding the steroid rumors against his Filipino rival. “Tell your country that Floyd loves them. And you know where to find my boxing gym at. My boxing gym is in Chinatown!”

Later, Mayweather got more serious and argued he couldn’t be racist because his team is composed of people with different ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs.

“I love everybody, I don’t have a racist bone in my body,” Mayweather said. “Some of my guys are Muslim, some of my guys are Jews. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, whites it doesn’t matter. There’s nothing but love in my heart. Anybody that was affected by what I said, I apologize as a man. Forgive me for saying what I said. I was just having fun. I didn’t mean it in a bad way.”

Mayweather did not verify when his “vacation” from the boxing ring will end. However, he did state the Pacquiao fight was a matter of “when,” not “if.”

The entire video can be viewed below.

Considering I’ve heard worse racial comments from Muhammad Ali (his gorilla taunts to Joe Frazier), Alan Minter (his “I’ll never lose to a black man” comment to Marvin Hagler) and even James Toney (misguidedly dressing like a Mexican to taunt a Puerto RicanJohn Ruiz), Mayweather’s remarks didn’t surprise me. In fact, they came off as one of his typical rants from HBO’s 24/7 series.

Was it ignorant? Sure. Could Mayweather even find the Philippines on a map? Probably not. But that is essentially the “Money Mayweather” character; an obnoxious but gifted athlete who’s been able to back up his over the top comments in the ring.

But until Pacquiao and Mayweather get it together on the business end, Money Mayweather’s act will run stale. Save up all the trash talk for the Mayweather-Pacquiao 24/7 once the fight is signed. Until then, HBO commentator Max Kellerman put it best yesterday.

  1. It was way out of order, more ignorant than racist…

Alan Minter is good friends with My uncle, and came to his wedding just after He won the World Title… He is now good friends with Hagler, Marvin Hagler even invited Him over to his Italian home not long ago… Boxers say stupid comments to cause A controversy to sell tickets and make publicity… Alan apologized 100x over, but its still no excuse… Hagler punished him BIG time in the ring for it anyways lol

unfortunately racism in sport is still around
