“We love Jesus but she done learned a lot from Satan…”
Over the last month, Kanye West has partied with Beyonce and Charlie Wilson, relished power with Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz, and morphed into a monster with Nicki Minaj. Now for the second installment of his G.O.O.D. Friday music series, Kanye West takes a more subdued route with “Devil in a New Dress.”
Lately, Kanye has had the tendency of layering his tracks with lots of rhythm changes, drum patterns, and singing vocals. Sometimes it can make the songs sound cluttered and erratic. But this time ‘Ye keeps in simple with a soul loop that harkens back to 2001, when he burst on the national scene with Jay-Z’s Blueprint. The song in its tone will remind you on a stripped down version of “Song Cry.”
Lyrically West also cuts back on the trash talk and tackles the bars from a second person narrative addressed to a femme fatale. He realizes the decision to be with her invites chaos, but like many men before him Kanye willingly lets his base desires overcome his better judgment. And in the light of the recent media attention to celebrity infidelity exploits and Hip-Hop’s own pathetic groupie stars, the content has relevant meaning outside of the seemingly fictional narrative.
“A mean a nigga did a lot of waiting/We ain’t married but tonight I need some consummation,” Kanye justifies. “May the Lord forgive us/May the gods be with us/In that magic hour I’ve seen good Christians/Make brash decisions…”
According to Swizz Beatz ‘Devil in a New Dress” slated to make the album and is his favorite track.
With Kanye’s deluge of Twitter commentary today on his regrets and trying to grow up, it’ll be interesting to see which direction he takes his music. He’s always been a manchild, but now appears to be the first time he’s consciously recognizing it. And better yet, he’s unsatisfied with what’s he seeing in the mirror. These are the first steps one must make in order to facillitate personal change.
At press time, ‘Ye is working to have another track out with featuring Pusha T and Big Sean by Tuesday (September 7).
