NBA icon Allen Iverson brought his book tour for the memoir Misunderstood to Atlanta’s Buckhead Theatre last night, giving fans an intimate look back at the career and mentality that made him one of basketball’s most influential figures.
T.I. hosted the event for his expediTIously podcast. When the conversation turned to superstar teammates he would have loved to play alongside, Iverson immediately imagined the possibilities.
“I feel like if I played with Shaq I would’ve had a great opportunity to win a championship. Definitely young LeBron. KG, that would be dope. I never thought of anything like that. I played with Melo, but we ran into Mamba at his peak and Tim Duncan.”
It was a reminder of the brutal Western Conference landscape Iverson encountered late in his prime — and an intriguing glimpse at what his relentless scoring and playmaking might have looked like paired with another all-time great.
But Iverson also pushed back on the idea that he spent his career wishing for a modern-style superteam. Looking back at the Philadelphia 76ers squad he carried to the 2001 NBA Finals, “The Answer” viewed the confidence other players had in him as an even greater validation than assembling multiple superstars.
“The biggest compliment I ever had in the league is that guys felt a dude that’s six foot and a 185 pounds, if we had him we could beat anybody. I already felt like I was already on a super team (with the 2001 76ers).”
More than two decades after that improbable Finals run, Iverson’s Atlanta appearance showed why his connection with fans remains so strong: the swagger is still there, but so is the pride in having built his legacy without needing the easiest road to greatness.
