Pernell Whitaker, a multi-division world champion and one of the most accomplished P4P fighters of the modern era, has died after being hit by a car while crossing a busy intersection in Virginia Beach. He was 55 years old.
Police were called Sunday night at 10:04 p.m. ET with reports of an accident at Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a badly injured pedestrian who passed away at the scene. That man was later identified as Whitaker. His son Domonique confirmed the news via Facebook.
Local news reports that this busy intersection has a dangerous reputation.
“The light changes real fast,” pedestrian Noel Brown told 13 ABC News Now. “As soon as I get across the street, suddenly it changed, and you have to stop in the middle and wait for the traffic to go and then you can go.”
The driver remained at the scene and spoke with police. At press time, the Fatal Accident Crash Team is investigating and it’s undetermined if the driver will face any charges.
Pernell Whitaker finished his career with a record of 40-4-1 having won major titles at lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight and light middleweight. He also holds wins over Azumah Nelson, Buddy McGirt, Greg Haugen, Roger Mayweather, and Jose Luis Ramirez.
Whitaker was inducted into the Boxing International Hall of Fame in 2006.
I’m completely devastated and in shock this morning. For those of you who are new to the sport, do yourself a favor and dig into Pernell’s resume on YouTube. Aside from the fights mentioned earlier, check on his schooling of then-undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez jr. (and how the judges robbed him of taking Chavez’s “0”), how he gave a prime Oscar De La Hoya fits (and arguably beat him) and made a final brave stand against the prime killer that was Felix Trinidad.
This is a massive loss for the boxing world. RIP Sweet Pea….
