A god by definition is all-powerful, all-aware. It is a being whose reach is limitless. Even with those lofty terms in place, most listeners won’t have any problem with Eminem naming this song “Rap God.” For about six minutes, the man takes you on a lyrical journey (or should I say massarce) that includes smart nods previous generations of lyrical emcees (Lakim Shabazz, Pharoahe Monch, Rakim etc.), to co-opting and enhancing the more simplistic flows we heard from the snap music era.
While the first single “Berzerk” raised eyebrows about how it would fit on the MMLP2, “Rap God” is the type of work we all expect to the hear on that project. The quirky beat isn’t much on its own, but your attention to it quicky evaporates under Em’s onslaught.
“Rap” God will be available tonight for purchase through iTunes.
