Marquez Leaving Golden Boy for Top Rank? Decision Coming Next Week

If I were a betting man, I'd say Marquez likely bolts to Top Rank. Getting revenge against Pacquiao is his obsession, and because of Top Rank and Golden Boy's acrimonious relationship, it's unlikely he'll get the opportunity under Golden Boy's banner.

Lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez will have a big decision next week when he meets with Golden Boy to decide his future promotional home.

For years, Marquez has been lobbying in vain for a rubbermatch with Top Rank fighter Manny Pacquiao, who defeated him via a controversial split decision in 2008. Since then, Marquez’s biggest fight was a losing effort to Floyd Mayweather in September 2009. In addition, Marquez has taken victories over Juan Diaz in a July rematch (UD12), and coming off the floor for a TKO over Michael Katsidis in last November.

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum had previously been dismissive of a Pacquiao-Marquez trilogy, citing that Pacquiao was now too big after competing successfully as high as junior middleweight. But now that Marquez’s contract is up with his arch-rival Golden Boy, Arum has warmed to the idea of a third fight.

“If we’re talking about November, who’s available that can make money?” Arum stated. “You come back really to Marquez: a draw and a close loss to Manny. That seems to me the most attractive fight.”

“We don’t know what Márquez’s plan or plans are,” admitted Goldeny Boy CEO Richard Schaefer earlier this week. “I am actually scheduled to meet with him next week in Mexico and see what he is planning on doing.”

If Marquez opts to stay with Golden Boy, Schaefer disclosed his next potential matchup would be the winner of the April 9 fight between Robert Guerrero and Michael Katsidis.

“The winner of this fight is not only in line for the world title fight, but actually, if Márquez would decide to move up or do something different, they might become the WBO Lightweight World Champion,” Schaefer verified.

At press time, Juan Manuel Marquez could not be reached for comment.

If I were a betting man, I’d say Marquez likely bolts to Top Rank. Getting revenge against Pacquiao is his obsession, and because of Top Rank and Golden Boy’s acrimonious relationship, it’s unlikely he’ll get the opportunity under Golden Boy’s banner. Plus, there’s no other fight out there that would come close to the Pacquiao payday. He’s already fought Mayweather, there’s not much left at lightweight money-wise, and risking himself against the top guys at 140 for lesser pay doesn’t make sense for the aged vet. Pacquiao is Arum’s trump card against anything Golden Boy can realistically offer.
