Haye-W. Klitschko Talks End, Haye To Face Chagaev

David Haye has announced preliminary plans to face his WBA mandatory opponent, Ruslan Chagaev, in May.

Earlier this week, Haye and Wladimir Klitschko were in negotiations to face each other on July 2 in Germany. The fight would have been a special PPV partnership between the UK’s Sky Sports, representing Haye, and Germany’s RTL, representing Klitschko. The July date was the earliest pay-per-view date both networks were willing to accomodate.

Haye’s manager, Adam Booth, proclaimed that fight “dead” after Klitschko decided to move forward with facing Dereck Chisora on April 30, roughly eight weeks before the proposed Haye-Klitschko fight.

“The Klitschko situation is dead,” Booth told The Sun. “I have asked Chagaev’s manager to supply medical records.”

Without a signed Klitschko contract, Haye must face his WBA mandatory, Ruslan Chagaev, or be stripped of the title. Because fellow UK fighter Amir Khan will have a PPV date in April, Haye will have to defend the following month, as Sky Sports does not want to air two pay-per-view matches in the same month. Depending on the May date, Haye would have had a little over a month to enter another training camp, and promote the Klitschko mega-fight through media appearances.

Wladimir Klitschko has maintained the Chisora bout is simply a “stay-busy” fight. His last bout was a September 2010 KO of Sam Peter, and the Ukrainian champion did not want to be out of the ring 10 months before facing Haye.

At press time, Klitschko is also said to be exploring options to face Tomasz Adamek in September 2011.

I truly wonder why it’s so difficult to maintain the attitudes they have in the below clips at the contract negotiating table.
