With only 11 pro fights, unknown Australian Garth Wood (10-1-1, 6 KOs) was supposed to be a glorified workout for 10 year veteran and former WBA super-middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (40-4, 24 KOs). Instead, Mundine suffered the most embarrassing and unexpected defeat of his career.
The fight was very ugly through the first four rounds, mired by a lot of mauling and shoving. Still, the much more experienced and talented Mundine had opened a cut over Woods’ left eye, and appeared in complete control. In the fifth, Woods caught Mundine with a high arching right hand while the former champ was pinned against the ropes. Mundine immediately began to slide to the floor, out cold.
Some Mundine fans are crying foul, claiming the shot was a rabbit punch. It’s looks completely legit to me, even with Mundine having turned his body and head away to avoid the shot. It’ll be a good promotional angle for the rematch. This is even worse than when Mundine got KO’d by feather-fisted Sven Ottke after months of trash-talk back in 2001.
Congrats to Garth Wood. Always great to see the underappreciated fighters get some glory.
