The Carters

Live from the Louvre Museum in Paris, The Carters indulge in high art extravagance in this surprise video drop for “Apeshit.”

The visuals serve as the opening salvo for the power couple’s first joint album, aptly titled Everything Is Love and streaming exclusively (for now) on TIDAL. What will immediately grab you on “Apeshit” is Bey’s flow. Yes, an artist of her stature will only get the best writers, but having a competent flow is not something writers can bestow on you (see Cardi B’s latest project). Here she rides the beat better than Jay (at times).

Everything Is Love is your appetizer for the On the Run II tour that hits the States on July 25.

The culture had a defining moment last night when Swizz Beatz and Just Blaze squared off for over two hours in an impromptu beat battle. Swizz dominated early with his overall showmanship, but Blaze came on strong late by dropping vintage Dipset (“I Mean It”), Jay Electronica (“Exhibit A”) and Jay  (“PSA”). Not to be outdone, Swizz decided to blow everyone’s mind by dropping an unreleased banger featuring Nas, Jay Z, Jadakiss and DMX.

I have no idea whose project this is supposed to be for or how old the track is. Based on Nas’ opening words, the song is presumably called “Bath Salts.” All I know is a CDQ version needs to drop ASAP. The sinister beat, grimy chorus (“This that shit street/ Nigga fuck that weak shit…”), and aggressive NY bars from everyone is exactly what the game needs.

Check out the track below.

I carry Brooklyn on my shoulders on some duffle shit

This New York

We aint supposed to do that mumble shit

Young M.A is back on the freestyle grind. This time, the BK young gun delivers bars over Jay Z’s “Dynasty” intro. As you can see from the excerpt, she has lines for detractors, New York doubters, and even the recent allegations that she has a ghostwriter.

Young M.A will be touring with 21 Savage through May.

How’s this for some Monday Motivation? DJ Khaled recruits Beyonce and Jay Z to celebrate a culture of winning on “Shining.” With the upbeat tempo and Bey’s rap inflections, you’ll be hard-pressed not end up nodding your head and singing along with the chorus. Take note at some of the Drake shots on this one (“A fella can’t make me fancy,” “I know you ain’t out here talking summers, right?,” “Saying boss shit when you’re a runner, right?”).

The Carter family is growing. Beyonce took to Instagram today to post a sitting side-view picture that confirms the superstar singer is expecting the birth of twins.

“We would like to share our love and happiness,” read the caption. “We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes.”

No word yet on exactly how far along the expecting couple are.

The TIDAL customer base just added 45 million customers. In an unprecedented deal, Sprint has acquired a 33% stake in Jay Z’s TIDAL for $200 million, allowing Sprint’s retail customers free access to the streaming service.

Announced as a “partnership,” Jay Z and the other artist-owners of the TIDAL brand will still oversee the service. Sprint will offer its 45 million customers unlimited access to TIDAL in addition to exclusive artist content. Sprint’s chief executive officer, Marcelo Claure, will join TIDAL’s Board of Directors.

“Sprint shares our view of revolutionizing the creative industry to allow artists to connect directly with their fans and reach their fullest, shared potential,” said Jay Z in a prepared statement. “Marcelo understood our goal right away and together we are excited to bring Sprint’s 45 million customers an unmatched entertainment experience.”

TIDAL currently boasts a catalog of 42.5 million songs and is available in over 52 countries. Jay Z originally purchased the brand three years ago for $56 million.

“Jay saw not only a business need, but a cultural one, and put his heart and grit into building TIDAL into a world-class music streaming platform that is unrivaled in quality and content,” said Claure. “The passion and dedication that these artist-owners bring to fans will enable Sprint to offer new and existing customers access to exclusive content and entertainment experiences in a way no other service can.”

At press time, a date has not been announced on when TIDAL will be available to Sprint customers.

In light of the brutal police shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, Jay Z is speaking out via his new track “Spiritual.” Written (and not finished) after the Mike Brown shooting, this serves as Jay’s first official solo release in years.
