Two years after retiring an undefeated champion, Welshman Joe Calzaghe has found a new passion in the silver screen.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Calzaghe confirmed that he began extensive acting lessons late last year. His work has already landed him a film role that for now he remains secretive about.

“When you retire from any sport it takes awhile to find what you really like and enjoy because retiring at 36, you’re still young,” Calzaghe stated. “You have to find what you next goal is after dedicating your life to one thing. I tried it [acting] eight months ago and really enjoyed it. [I] joined an agency. I have lessons every week. I got my first part, filming [begins] in October. I can’t really say too much about it… I’m really excited.”

Calzaghe had kind words for Carl Froch, who had hounded him for a match in the final years of Calzaghe’s WBO reign at super-middleweight. Calzaghe, who engaged in his own failed callouts of more established fighters in his younger years like Sven Ottke and Steve Collins, holds no animosity against Froch for his previous behavior.

“I can’t blame him. If I was in that position I’d probably do the same,” Calzaghe admitted. “He’s looking for a big payday and wants to fight the best. I respect him as a fighter. What’s there not to respect? He gets in the ring and he fights. He gives 100% and wears his heart on his sleeve and has ability. He’s always in exciting fights.”

Regarding a comeback, Calzaghe disclosed still keeps up the cardio aspects of his old boxing regimen. However, he maintains family life and the relaxation of retirement trumps any thoughts he has of returning to in-ring glory.

“I’ve laced my boxing gloves maybe four times in the last two years,” said Calzaghe. “I’m happy with that.”
