There’s a growing feeling in FROM season 4 that Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) is no longer fighting to save the town. He’s fighting to hold himself together, and that tension explodes throughout episode 402 as the emotional fallout of Jim’s death, the lingering terror of the Man in Yellow, and the town’s deepending paranoia continue to tighten around everyone. And according to Perrineau himself, things are only getting darker from here.
In my exclusive interview and full Episode 2 breakdown, Perrineau delivered one of the clearest windows yet into Boyd’s mental collapse following the events of last season — especially after witnessing Smiley’s impossible return.
At this point, Boyd’s mind is rightfully splintered into pieces. Just the seeing of Smiley come back — in a world where everything is unbelievable… He’s a soldier [who believes in] life and death. There’s no coming back. You live, you die, that’s it. And this thing comes back? People say mind blown? Yes, and shattered into pieces. And that’s where we start off the season.
And Perrineau made it clear that Boyd’s season 4 trauma didn’t begin with Smiley’s resurrection. Fans will witness the accumulated damage from Elgin’s torture, watching Tien-Chen’s death, and the helplessness of having no clear solutions.
Boyd no longer feels like a man determined to solve a mystery. He feels like someone mentally drowning, as evidenced by the season 4 premiere scene of him counting the remaining bullets for a mass suicide option.
[From] doing crazy stuff last season — the torture, watching Tien-Chen, all of it. His mind is splintered and he’s gotta find a way to go forward. And that’s the thing I think it going to be really juicy to follow.
Which brings us to Acosta.
One of the most tension-filled dynamics brewing early this season is the escalating friction between Boyd and Acosta, and Perrineau hinted that things could spiral into dangerous territory moving forward.
I don’t want to give anything away, but Acosta is difficult. He does put hands on her — I would never advocate for a man to put hands on a woman. But she acts like she’s looking for an ass-whooping. Even that first time when they meet and she’s like ‘give me my gun.’ I made me Harold laugh. Like ‘oh, are we fighting?’ So, Acosta is going to be interesting to watch.
