1995 was a damn good year. Mobb Deep was building an Infamous reputation, B.I.G. was king, and Raekwon found his Cuban connection, to name a few standouts. For his second single off Summer Knights (July 1), Joey Badass crafts a track that’s a nod to that era with his own current twist. Lee Bannon’s production is very good, but the head-scratcher is why Joey decided to damn year yell throughout the song. A few people online joked that he was doing a good Onyx impersonation, but even that wild Queens crew knew how to use their inside voices over more subdued beats (look no further than their underrated sophomore album All We Got Iz Us).
