WBA super-middleweight champion Andre Ward has suffered a cut in sparring that will delay his Super Six finals showdown with WBC titlist Carl Froch.
Ward disclosed the injury earlier this morning. After arriving in Los Angeles from Oakland, he received seven stitches.
“I sustained a cut in sparring a few hours ago,” Ward posted on Twitter. “Flew to LA to see the Doc. I got 7 stitches. I will let you know the new date soon… #Partofthegame.”
Ward has remained undefeated since the start of Showtime’s Super Six tournament in 2009, posting wins over Mikkel Kessler, Allan Green and Arthur Abraham.
Froch also went to Twitter to confirm the fight was postponed, but also took opportunity to slight Ward’s injury.
“Still waiting for official confirmation on what’s happening with @andreward,” he said. “I do know he’s definitely got a scratch above his eyebrow.”
The Ward-Froch bout was originally scheduled to take place on October 29. At press time, Showtime has not announced an alternate date.
