“How we became friends/ I was walking out divorce court/ She was walking in…”
Baltimore singer-songwriter CJ Hilton isn’t a name that’s instantly recognizable, but 21-22 year old Baltimore singer-songwriter has been in the music industry since the age of 13. He even has Grammy nomination under his belt for his work on Raphael Saadiq’s 2008 hit “Never Give You Up.” Last year, he was getting ready to drop his debut on J Records, and this offering with Nas may be a part of that project.
CJ’s previous songs have lyrics that are homages to older classic from Hip-Hop and soul. That trend continues here with lines that recall memories of Marvin Gaye, Jay and Foxy, and Entouch’s “Too Hype.” This will be enjoyable for older listeners, and Nas drops a very succinct narrative that details a quick rebound from Kelis straight out the courtroom. CJ Hilton isn’t reinventing the wheel, but we’ll see how much noise he makes for the rest of 2011.
