Now this is how you kick off a Monday. Alchemist surprised everyone earlier with a tweet announcing a new Mobb track featuring fellow QB representer Nas. After being close in the 90s, Nas and Prodigy had a fall-out of sorts over the last decade (see Nas’ “Destroy and Rebuild”). It appears those lingering ill feelings have fallen to the wayside to make room for some vintage Nas rhyming on “Dog Shit.”
Alchemist and Havoc craft a beat with sparse piano notes as the main melody. Mobb and Nas do well over minimalist-type production, so only a simple electronic effect and a “ooh” crooning note to flesh out the entire beat.
Nas is the welcome surprise here. From his recent output, many have wondered if he was completely done with street content he did so well on albums like It Was Written. This will dispel those murmurings. The verse is executed so well that many online were wondering if this was an old verse that the Mobb got a hold of. Nasir shouts out Prodigy coming home so that verifies the verse is new. Both Havoc and Prodigy are good here; its just Nas’ presence and command on the mic that dominates this track.
This bodes well for both Nas and Mobb Deep’s upcoming work.
