BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO — Giovanni Segura (27-1-1, 23 KOs) confirmed his superiority over former pound for pound fighter Ivan Calderon (34-2-1, 6 KOs) with a dominant 3rd round KO.
From round one Segura imposed his bigger size and strength on Calderon, who he KO’d in eight rounds last August. The 36-year-old Calderon tried to circle away from Segura, but did not have the power in his potshots to make Segura cautious about bullying forward with body punches.
Calderon was already laboring by the third. A right upstairs pushed the Iron Boy to the ropes, and Segura brought him to his knees with a right hand to the body. Perhaps remembering the slow beating from the first fight, Calderon took the 10 count from referee Samuel Viruet despite being able to continue.
“He dominated me with his strength,” Calderon said afterward.
The two losses to Segura are the only defeats of Ivan Calderon’s 10 year career. At press time, he has not confirmed if he will retire.
