Less than 24 hours separate us from the biggest fight of the year when Errol Spence and Terence Crawford clash to unify the welterweight division.
Following the weigh-in, I’m finally secure in giving my pick of Terence Crawford to score a definitive stoppage win. From my perspective, this fight happening now is a perfect storm for Crawford to cap his welterweight run and define this as the Crawford era.
The first reason centers on physical strength. For years, we’ve settled on the notion that Spence as the career welterweight will be the stronger man come July 29. However, Crawford has been in the division for 5 years and is fully acclimated. Also, a common opponent in Shawn Porter may shed light on both men’s physical prowess.
Spence’s bout with Porter was evenly matched from a physicality standpoint. Both men had their moments muscling each other around. With Crawford, the Omaha native held a distinct edge in the clinches. In one moment highlighted in the below clip, Crawford was able to muscle Porter from ring-center to the ropes. This is important because Porter, who started his career at middleweight, deliberately boiled down to 147 to hold a strength advantage.
Therefore, don’t be surprised if Spence isn’t able to bully around Crawford as he’s done with most opponents during his title run.
