Shannon Briggs’ “Let’s Go Champ” campaign against Wladimir Klitschko made a pit stop on Saturday in Lula, Mississippi, where the former champion made quick work of Richard Cormack with three first round knockdowns.
Amazingly, the WBA moved Briggs to #7 in their heavyweight rankings even before this bout. Although he’s six fights into his comeback, Briggs has achieved this distinction despite not having met even a Top 20 fighter in the ring.
The WBA does allow for “voluntary defenses” per approval, so it’s quite possible that Briggs could get a shot after Klitschko is done with Kubrat Pulev later this month.
The 42-year old Briggs may not have earned the shot in the ring. But in a boxing business that’s predicated on profile and marketability, Briggs’ mouth and antics have elevated him past in peers. Speaking of marketability, you can order your very own “Let Go Champ!” merchandise HERE.
