Drake – “Draft Day”

Drake sets his sights (and bars) on Jay-Z

Drake came out swinging late Tuesday night via “Draft Day,” which dropped on his official Twitter. Over a loop of Lauryn Hill’s sweet, cautionary coos on “Doo Wop,” Drake takes a few clear shots at the man he once named as a mentor.

Outside of a glib comment about Chance the Rapper’s name, the focus of this track is answering Jay-Z comments from “We Made It.” On that track, the Roc Nation mogul returned fire to Drake’s “off the record” Rolling Stone comments about his rhymes about owning expensive art being corny and contrived (“Silly me rappin’ ‘bout shit that I really bought/While these rappers rap about guns they ain’t shot/And a bunch of other silly shit that they ain’t got…”). Here, Drake draws a line in the sand based on their opposite points in life (Jay being a married man) while adding a jab about Jay fearing direct confrontation.

I’m focused on makin’ records and gettin’ bigger
Just hits, no misses, that’s for the married folk
Tell ’em fix my suite up cause I’m comin’ home
I heard he talkin’ crazy, I was out of town
You know they love to pop all that shit when I’m not around
But when I’m here, not a sound

In addition to the Jay subliminals, Kanye appears to catch some shrapnel as well for being too focused on high-end fashion and fiancée Kim Kardashian over his art (“They too worried ’bout bitches and fashion, they go missin’ in action…”)

Despite the pointed shots, this still comes off as more of an on wax discussion than anything with any real animosity. Jay will of course respond with a few lines, but don’t expect any full-fledged diss tracks back and forth. For all their skill, that’s neither guy’s MO.
