The Short Count: Dereck Chisora TKO6 Malik Scott

LONDON, England -- Every boxing fan has an opinion on Dereck Chisora's controversial stoppage win over previously undefeated Malik Scott last Saturday at the Wembley Arena. Was Scott the victim of a home-cookin ref, or just an incompetent one? Or did Scott simply misjudge the count, 'ala Jersey Joe Walcott in his rematch with Rocky Marciano?

LONDON, England — Every boxing fan has an opinion on Dereck Chisora’s controversial stoppage win over previously undefeated Malik Scott last Saturday at the Wembley Arena. Was Scott the victim of a home-cookin ref, or just an incompetent one? Or did Scott simply misjudge the count, ‘ala Jersey Joe Walcott in his rematch with Rocky Marciano?

From my vantage point, it was judgement call were personally I would have given Scott the benefit of the doubt. Yes, the ref had counted nine, but I’ve seen most refs “pause” their count when a fighter rises right after nine. Technically, you could argue those guys should be counted out, but why end a bout if a fighter is in shape to continue? That question is very relevant here, since the fight was starting to heat up with Chisora’s pressure paying big dividends via his thudding shots to the body, mauling, and the occasional awkward right hook upstairs. On the other hand, Scott had found some success timing Chisora forward movement with uppercuts, but he still had to use his legs and work hard behind the jab.

Going forward, fighters better err on the side of caution and be up at eight if forced to take a knee.

  1. I was surprised, but in technically the ref was right:

    From the BBBofC rules.

3.32.1 In this Regulation 3.32, “down” shall mean one or more of the following:-

    d) when a Boxer is in the act of rising

And the only person not complaining in Malik’s team was Malik himself! You would of thought that he was would of been going as crazy as Jesse Reid and them, I think Malik wanted out, and this was his way of doing so…
