NAKHON RATCHASIMA, THAILAND — Former flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam has confirmed his retirement after suffering an emphatic, shocking TKO loss to Rey Migreno last night at the Central Pavilion.
Wongjongkam came into the fight on a four-bout win streak (three by KO) since being KO’d in six by Sonny Boy Jaro in March. Migreno was expected to be another stay busy fight as Wongjongkam had previously defeated him twice via a 2007 unanimous decision and 2010 first round KO.
Both fighters exchanged heavily in the opening two rounds with Migreno delivering the harder blows. Wongjongkam picked up his combination punching in the third but was dropped and badly hurt by a right hook. Wongjongkam stumbled to his feet and was quickly dispatched against the ropes with a series of unanswered hooks that put him back on the canvas for the last time.
Should he remain retired, the 35-year-old Wongjongkam leaves the ring a two-time flyweight champion and a record of 87-5-2, with 46 KOs.
