“Once upon a time on the corner…”
Smoke DZA’s first single from his Rolling Stoned album offers a story on a doomed, drug dealing basketball prospect, and a vivid description of the mentality of a group of young men groomed on the streets. DZA handles the basketball player’s tale, chronicling how his focus on passing around drugs instead improving his jumpshot brings about his downfall. Bun B tackles the latter story by not focusing on one individual, by detailing the lifestyle (cars, women, clothes etc.) of a group of friends raised on the streets. Big K.R.I.T. does well on the production, using a drum kick that sounds very similar to the one used on Outkast’s “Elevators.” A verse would have been welcomed, but K.R.I.T. does a strong job making his voce heard on the chorus that brings together the hustlers, tricks, hoes, killers and other assorted street personalities that make up the corner. DZA’s Rolling Stoned album hits stores on August 30.
