Playing Games? Jazmine Sullivan Is Wise to the “Circus” Act

One of the most demeaning feelings for a woman is the realization of being used by a man they care more. Jazmine Sullivan uses carnival imagery to address that topic on "Circus."

“I know it’s just a show for you/ Baby it’s what you do/ But I don’t want to be another performer in your circus…”

One of the most demeaning feelings for a woman is the realization of being used by a man she cares more. Jazmine Sullivan uses carnival imagery to address that topic on “Circus.” Not wanting to be a “carnival act,” Sullivan  muses on the mental and physical manipulation she refuses to be a part of (“He tried to wind me up like a little doll…”). The production is video-game like and repetitive; think the sound Pacman makes when eating pellets. But with the runtime being just over two minutes, the tracks wraps up before it can start to really irritate, and Sullivan’s voice deflects attention away from it.
