Being an independent artist means having creative control over your work. It also means occasionally having to check someone (promoter, fan, writer etc.) who gets out of line. That’s the basis behind this remix for “That Ain’t Gone Ride.” The upbeat and whimsical nature of DJ Rasta Root’s production and chorus keep the mood light-hearted. However, the topics covered are serious issues for all independent emcees: wack rappers, janky promoters, and shady writers. Phife is old enough to remember when rappers regularly fought journalists, so it’s no surprise he advocates throwing hands with scribes who’ve used their pen to violate.
