40-year-old Grady Brewer scored the latest surprise upset of 2011 last night (June 17) with a fourth round TKO over previously undefeated prospect Fernando Guerrero. For the majority of the bout, Guerrero maintained control by walking down the backpedaling Brewer with a southpaw right jab and straight lefts. At the 1:44 mark of round four, Brewer stunned Guerrero with a sweeping right hook that landed behind the 24 year old’s left glove. Brewer followed up with another right hook that pushed Brewer into the ropes. From there, Brewer continued with a succession of wild right haymakers to the head until Guerrero finally collapsed through the ropes.

Guerrero slowly got up to beat the count at eight. Brewer picked up his wild assault, and his recklessness momentarily gave Guerrero a reprieve when he slipped on the canvas. Brewer went back on the attack with the right hand for a third time. Guerrero, now badly dazed, would fall on his face after catching a right uppercut while trying to clinch. Referee Jon Schorle stopped the contest with 42 seconds remaining.

Fernando Guerrero falls to 21-1 (16 KOs). Grady Brewer improves to 28-12 (16 KOs), and gets his biggest win since a 2008 split decision over current IBF junior middleweight champion Cornelius Bundrage.
