Just a few days after her show-stealing performance at the Billboard Awards, Beyonce took the stage tonight to debut the new ballad “1 + 1.” Bey has never been an amazing vocalist in the class of your Patti LaBelle’s and Chaka Khan’s, but this track is a perfect example that shows her voice is not weak by any stretch of the imagination. And with the right production and lyrics, it can be downright moving. Bey has made female anthems a cornerstone of her catalogue; lyrically, “1 + 1” is one of her best at capturing the self-sacrifice and all-encompassing devotion a woman makes to her significant other when in love. Expect this song to be much bigger than “Run the World (Girls).”
