Moscow, Russia — Denis Lebedev defeated former champion Roy Jones Jr via technical knockout early today with just 11 seconds remaining in the bout.

Lebedev had been in control the entire bout. With 22 seconds to go, he trapped Jones against the ropes and hurt the Pensacola native badly with an overhand right. Jones bent over at the waist and was subjected several more hard shots, including a right uppercut, before American referee Steve Smoger stepped in at Lebedev’s insistence.

Immediately afterward, Jones slowly slumped to the canvas face first. He was revived a minute later.

Lebedev improves his record to 22-1 with 17 KOs, rebounding from a  December 2010 loss to Marco Huck. Jones loses his third consecutive bout and falls to 54-8, 40 KOs.

Jones needs to be saved from himself. Taking beatings like this at 42 years does not bode well for the quality of life he’ll have in his 50s and 60s. Already, he’s complained of having neurological difficulties. Boxing commissions around world need to revoke his ability to fight ASAP. He’s in much worse shape than Holyfield and will likely die in the ring if he’s allowed to continue fighting. For me, Roy Jones Jr today is the saddest figure in boxing today. Maybe seeing his wife in tears being consoled by Nate Campbell will be enough.
