It’s no surprise that arguably Hip-Hop’s greatest album continues to inspire emcees 17 years after its release. Following Fashawn’s well-executed Ode to Illmatic remake last year, Elzhi is offering his own tribute, starting with this reinterpretation of “NY State of Mind.” Anyone whose been keeping up with the news is well aware of the destitute condition of Detroit’s economy. That reality has fueled much anger and despair in the remaining residents. DJ Premier’s classic beat remains mostly untouched, but is now rendered with all live instruments. Elzhi does an excellent job of recreating Nas’ youthful zeal while centering his rhymes on all the seedy ingredients (cops, addicts, players, pimps etc.) that make up Detroit’s underground. Elzhi’s team is guaranteeing anyone that’ll listen that this tape will be a “game-changer” and make all the year-end “Best of” lists. With the Illmatic legacy on the line, it damn well better.
