Roy Jones Jr joins Floyd Mayweather as the latest high-profile boxer to be pursued by the IRS for back taxes.
According to the Detroit News, the IRS levied a lien for $629,085 on March 21 on Jones’ Florida properties for income earned in 2009. That year, Jones fought three bouts against Omar Sheika, Jeff Lacy and Danny Green.
An older, larger IRS lien from February 2008 is for $2,946,650 on income the former champion earned from 2003-2004. That period is notable for several career highs and lows for Jones, including his historic heavyweight title win over John Ruiz, and subsequent fall from grace via consecutive knockout losses to Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson.
Jones is scheduled to launch another comeback on May 21 in Moscow against Denis Lebedev.

People owing taxes is not alarming in itself. Everyone from regular 9-5ers to multi-millionaires have at one time or another been an at odds with Uncle Sam. But I get worried anytime a fighter, especially a past prime one, gets in financial trouble because it almost always means they’ll get back in the ring. In Roy’s case the concern is very warranted. Two months ago, I posted an article on Jones undergoing experimental treatment to “reverse” the effects of brain damage suffered in the ring. By continuing to fight, it’s safe to assume the problems he’s experiencing will get much worse.
Boxing fans have heard this story many times with different names. Still doesn’t make it any easier to swallow.

Fuck, now Roys defo gonna keep fighting SMH theres gonna Be tragic end to to RJJ’s career smh
