Beats, Boxing & Mayhem has confirmed the passing of Gil Glancy yesterday morning at the age of 88.
Glancy started his career in New York City and gained recognition as one of the sport’s best trainers through his work with George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali, Ken Buchanan, Juan LaPort, Jerry Quarry, Rodrigo Valdes and many others. Glancy’s first championship fighter was fellow Hall of Famer Emile Griffith, who he guided to titles at welterweight and middleweight over a 20 year span. Clancy was ringside for Griffith-Paret III tragedy, where his fighter accidentally killed Paret in the ring.
Outside of training, Clancy served as the boxing matchmaker for Madison Square Garden (1978-1981), and a commentator for the CBS, HBO and MSG networks. In 1983, Clancy received the Sam Taub award for excellence in broadcast journalism.
Clancy was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993. He came out of retirement to briefly train a young Oscar De La Hoya in the mid 90s.
At the time of death, Gil Clancy was staying at an assisted living facility in Melverne, New York. He is survived by two daughters, two sons, 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
At press time, funeral arrangements have not been disclosed.
